Outside Moscow, another helicopter was taking off. This one had a nine man Russian Special Forces Spetsnaz team.

Their commander was a big burly man called Major Boris Zimin. A veteran of many conflicts, he also had the luxury of being good friends with President Timoshenko. Which meant he got the calls when something discreet needed done, and the usual monthly retainer made its way to his secret Zurich bank account. When Zimin retired, he would be a very wealthy man, thanks to his President.

Inside the helicopter, Zimin looked at his eight men. He had fought alongside each one for many years, and they were all trusted. Not a single one of them would ever question his orders, and this is why he had chosen these eight to accompany him to Smolensk.

The men sat, wordlessly. Two closed their eyes, despite the noise of the helicopter’s rotor blades, another two checked their equipment, while the others merely stared into space.

Everybody had their own way of processing the moments before going into a battle, reflected Zimin. Some slept, some were active, some dreamt.

Him? He was a dreamer. He dreamt of his money in Switzerland.
